⚠️ What If You Don't Enroll in IDAP?
- • Your license is fully revoked (no driving at all)
- • 1st offense: 180 days full revocation
- • 2nd offense: 1 year full revocation
- • Refusal: 180 days to 3 years depending on priors
- • You'll still need an interlock after reinstatement
Bottom line: IDAP is almost always the better choice.
IDAP Duration by Offense
First Offense
Last 60 days must be violation-free
Second Offense
Last 120 days must be violation-free
Third+ Offense
Last 365 days must be violation-free
Note: Each violation extends your requirement by the violation-free period length.
How the Device Works
Starting the car: You blow into the device for 2-4 seconds. If your BAC is below the threshold (usually 0.02-0.03%), the car starts. If not, it locks you out for a waiting period.
Rolling retests: While driving, the device will beep and require another test at random intervals. Miss it or fail, and the horn honks and lights flash until you pull over.
Data logging: Every test is recorded and reported to the Board of Tests and potentially the court.
What Nobody Warns You About
⚠️ False Positives Happen
Mouthwash, hand sanitizer, certain foods, and even some medications can trigger a fail. The device doesn't know the difference between alcohol in your mouth and alcohol in your blood.
Pro tip: Rinse with water before every test. Wait 15 minutes after eating or drinking.
The Embarrassment Factor
Yes, people will see you blow into it. Rolling retests happen everywhere — at stoplights, drive-throughs, parking lots.
Reality: Most people don't know what it is. Those who do have probably been through it themselves.
Calibration = Mandatory
Every 30-60 days, bring your car for calibration. Miss it and your car locks out completely. The Board of Tests gets notified.
Pro tip: Schedule your next appointment before leaving each visit.
Cold Weather = Slow Starts
The device needs to warm up. On cold Oklahoma mornings, plan for extra time.
⚠️ Violations Extend Your Time
A fail or missed test can extend your IDAP period by 60-365 days depending on your offense level. Document everything so you can contest false positives.
